Our virtuoso orchestra, under concertmaster Thomas Yang, will present the final set of Concerto Grossi that we have yet to offer to you, our faithful supporters. If you have come to our concerts since the outset, you have now heard every one of his magnificent Concerti Grossi. Under the baton of our Artistic Director, Dennis Northway, we will present, on Sunday, February 12th at 3:00 p.m., the Concerto Grosso HWV 317 Opus 3 no. 6 in D major along with HWV 288 in B♭ and HWV 303 in G Minor. And, we will again welcome beloved soprano, Rosalind Lee, in presenting the ravishing early composition, HWV 235, Motet for soprano and strings Hæc est regina virginum.

The much-anticipated chamber concert this year, Sing and Play in Dulcet Tone: The Intimate Handel, will use countertenor, flute, harpsichord and ’cello. Be sure to join us on Saturday, 25 February at 7:30 p.m. Our new English countertenor, Jake Barlow, with a golden, intimate voice, will offer, with ’cello and Artistic Director Dennis Northway on harpsichord, two lovely secular cantatas, Siete rose rugiadose HWV 162, and Vedendo amor HWV 175. Along with this, long-time friend of Handel Week, the harpsichord virtuoso, Erik Liefrinck will again dazzle us presenting Handel’s intense and challenging solo harpsichord sonatas. We will top all this off with a beautiful flute sonata played on a golden flute by Marcia Hustad.

Concert III: Sunday, 5 March 2017 @ 3:00 pm

The Oratorio Alexander’s Feast HWV 75

We will end the season with what is often the most performed piece after Messiah, the celebration of music on a text by John Dryden, the Oratorio HWV 75 Alexander’s Feast. Join Handel Week favorites Sarah Gartshore, soprano, Philip Kraus, baritone, and William Bouuvel, tenor, along with the magnificent Handel Week Chorus and Orchestra on Sunday, 5 March at 3:00 in the marvelous acoustics of Grace Church.

The first encyclopaedic collector of Handel's manuscripts was Elizabeth Legh (1695-1734) and Handel seems to have taken some of his early cantatas for soprano and transposed and ornamented them especially for her. This is a rare treasure of cantatas re-worked by Handel. Join us in an intimate chamber setting as we hear Countertenor Joseph Schlesinger present these cantatas that you will never hear again! A perfect evening of songs of love and loss!

Concert III: The Oratorio Theodora, HWV 68
Sunday, March 3, 2013, 3:00 PM (pre-concert lecture begins at 2:30 pm)

Handel was a proud man and a great empressario, and when asked what his favorite work of all was, he almost always said Theodora, composed in 1749. He took highest pride in the ending chorus of the second act "He saw the lovely youth" as being even better than the Halleluia Chorus of Messiah! The story is of a fourth-century woman in Antioch, then under Roman rule, who refuses to pay homage to Jove. She is then sentenced to disgrace, possible rape and is prepared to die for her faith. To the amazement of the Romans, she is accompanied in martyrdom by Didymus, a Roman officer who had been converted by her. This is a once-in a lifetime opportunity to hear this masterpiece mounted by the Handel Week Festival Orchestra, Chorus and Soloists.

Our 2011 festival 12th season begins with The Grand Handel: Orchestra Alive! As is our tradition, this concert features our remarkable Handel Week Festival orchestra and orchestral soloists in compositions every bit as virtuosic and demanding as Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti, namely the famous Handel Concerti Grossi.

It will combine a virtuoso organ concerto, a demanding cantata for alto and string orchestra, and two concerto grossi. This year we will present two master works the HWV 315 concerto grosso in F major, and the HWV 316 in d minor. Long-time Handel Week favorite Sarah Gartshore will be the featured soloist.

Our audiences have always loved, as Handel’s audiences loved, the thrill of an organ concerto, so this year we are presenting the Organ Concerto 307 in A. In his early period, he wrote a significant number of secular cantatas, and though most are simply for soprano, cello and harpsichord, some are more elaborate. We are pleased this year to present the Cantata Carco sempre di Gloria HWV 87 for alto, strings and basso continuo.

We present TWO performances of our long-anticipated chamber cantata concert. Ah, Cruel Love! Ah, Cruel Fate!, or Chamber Rejoicings and Laments on Love and Life feature the soprano soloists Rosalind Lee and Nicci Krebasch singing cantatas Del bel idolo mio HWV 104, Notte placida e cheta HWV 142, Tu fedel? Tu costante? HWV 171, and Poichè giuraro amore. Two of these cantatas feature our superb concertmaster Thomas Yang and Handel Week festival favorite Jeri Lou Zike. Rounding out the program is Handel family treasure Erik Liefrinck playing one suite and one partita.

They were quickly established in standard use on such occasions because of their elegance and splendor.
